Chapter 2: I’ll Protect You
Here I was, standing or shall I say shaking, in front of him. I must have blushed all shades of red as he stared at me.
“I, uh...I...” was all I could muster.
“What’s going on Lina? Why are you standing there, shaking? Also, your face is all red. Are you feeling ok?”
“I, uh...I’m ok.” I lied as I pretended to laugh.
“I don’t think so. You look sick to me. Let me check.” He said as he stood up and got close to me. He slowly raised his hand and put it on my forehead. “Wow, you’re really warm. You should lay down.” He then got beside me and picked me up into his arms. I began to freak out.
“What are you doing, Gourry?! Put me down! Put me down you dolt!” I yelled as a kicked a bit. I didn’t kick that hard though because I secretly liked it when he picked me up like that.
He then placed me down under a Weeping Willow tree. He then took out a small blanket we had in one of our bags and he laid it out. I blinked a few times then realized he picked me up again to place me on the blanket. I sat up as I continued to watch him. He went into the bag again and pulled out one of his shirts. He bunched it up and came back over to me. He then put it on the ground and knelt down to my left. He then wrapped his arms around my head and pulled me towards his chest. I was so close that I could feel his warmth and I could hear his heart beating. It was beating as if his was panicking. Was he really that worried about me? He then lowered my head after he placed the shirt on the blanket, as a pillow. I looked up at him and my heart seemed to skip a beat. I couldn’t believe someone was being this nice to me. I didn’t realize he cared so much. He then turned away to look towards the pond.
“Lina, you really should take better care of yourself. How can I protect you if you are hurting yourself like this? I’m really worried about you.”
I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say to that (wow, that was a first for me). He really thought I was sick or doing this to myself somehow. If only he would get a real clue once in a while. I just sighed and closed my eyes. Then they shot right open once I realized everything he had said to me. He was really worried about me. I looked over at him and saw that he was in his own thoughts, so I sat up. I blushed as thoughts swam through my head.
‘I know we’ve been together for a long time now and we’ve been through so much. I always thought he cared about me, but more as a little sister or something. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just thinking into this too much. Maybe he just cares about me as a friend and is just worried. That must be it. People can still be worried about their friends. Then again, why am I blushing? Do I think of him as just a friend? Or is it something else? Man, why can’t things just be like they use to be and be simple?’ Those kind of thoughts kept coming and going as I continued to sit there. My heart was beating faster than it does during a battle. I couldn’t control it.
Gourry looked over to me and saw that I was breathing pretty heavy. He got closer beside me and leaned towards my face.
“Lina, you need to lay down.” He said as he grabbed my shoulders and tried to get me to lay down. “Move over to your right a bit.”
I did as he said but I had no idea why. Then I noticed him getting ready to lay down next to me. Now my chest was starting to hurt from the pounding of my heart. Why was this happening? He was now laying next to me on the blanket. He then turned onto his right side so he was facing me.
“You need to calm down and take it easy. Don’t worry, I’ll be here to protect you like I promised. Now, please get some rest.”
I did start to calm down, so I turned onto my right side. My heart almost jumped out of my chest when I felt his arms wrap around me. I didn’t know what to do. But then I had a sudden feeling of comfort. I immediately calmed down again. I felt warm in his embrace. For some reason, it felt almost natural to lay like this with him. I closed my eyes but then they opened as I could hear Gourry snoring. How does he fall asleep so fast? But before I knew it, I found myself falling asleep too.
